This was a very brief but fun encounter with a moose that was on her way to somewhere else in the forest this morning. Sometimes moose will stay put for hours on end and other times they're steadily on the go. I caught a glimpse of her and instantly knew that I only had a moment to try and get a picture before she was long gone. The early morning shadows, her stance and the direction she was walking made it impossible to get a great shot. So- with nothing to lose I tried a little experiment to see just how well she could hear me. At this point, I was inside my house and she hadn't seen me. I took a couple pics inside, but I knew that I needed to get outside for any chance of a clear shot. Dressed in only my PJs, I was in no position to stand out in the cold, but from my garage there's a little window that I could open to see her directly. She was about 75 yards away at this point and there was a light breeze which always helps mask sounds. Knowing that this little window makes a bit of noise to open, this was my test. Could she hear me slowly open the window just an inch? Yes, yes she could. A human with their eyes closed would have had no chance hearing the window from 10 feet, but from ~200 feet away she immediately looked my direction despite the breeze and facing the opposite direction. I was really impressed since the "test" was really quiet given I hadn't even opened the window up enough for a picture yet. My presense prompted her to continue on, and a few moments later she disappeared into the woods.
