By the time that the action started to heat up, so had the temperatures (and subsequently the heat waves). Atmospheric disturbance, wind and blowing sand made sharp pictures really challenging on this latest visit to Sand Wash Basin, but the drama seems to never stop out there. A few images came out super sharp when the mustangs were extremely close to me, but some of my faves are far from tack sharp.

Nearly every time I photograph wild horses, I witness something so perplexing that I wish I could debrief with an expert. As crude as this is to share, the aggressive mustang vomited a tiny bit at the exact moment that he is biting the colorful/spotted horse. It is pretty insane when looking closely at the sequence of biting images. The recipient of the bite was furious, and I love his pose in response. He kicked up the dirt and pointed his hoof at the aggressor ... all while just a few feet away from me. It was pretty cool to watch. I was pleasantly surprised that the spotted horse calmed down really quickly and then even more surprised as he drifted my direction afterwards.
